SKCCC Biostats Core

Overview of Services

The Biostatistics Shared Resource (BiostatSR) supports the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (SKCCC) to ensure that study designs, data procedures, and analyses of study data use state-of-the-art methods that provide an accurate and reproducible summary of the study results, including associated uncertainties, and to help SKCCC researchers garner peer-reviewed funding. The BiostatSR, established in 1986, received its first CCSG funding as a shared resource that year. BiostatSR continues close collaborations with SKCCC members, providing expertise in study design, data analysis, regulatory and interim reporting (e.g., data safety and monitoring reports), manuscript writing, and development of new biostatistical methods and study designs required by a project or benefiting multiple SKCCC investigators. BiostatSR also supports creation of information systems to support individual or Research Program efforts.

In addition to being strongly integrated into all Programs in the SKCCC, BiostatSR biostatisticians have important intellectual ties to other units at Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM), such as the Department of Biostatistics in the Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH). This diverse environment provides SKCCC investigators with strong, broad-based biostatistical expertise.

The quantitative nature of clinical, translational, and basic scientific investigation continues to grow. The design and analysis of these studies require knowledge of the subject matter, thorough understanding of the biologic and/or clinical rationale underlying each study, and expertise in statistical methodology for dealing with uncertainty and variation. The goal of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center (SKCCC) Biostatistics Shared Resource (BiostatSR) is to ensure that study designs, data procedures, and analyses of study data use state-of-the-art methods that provide an accurate and reproducible summary of the study results, including associated uncertainties, and to help SKCCC researchers garner peer-reviewed funding.

BiostatSR services include provision of statistical designs, analysis plans, and information infrastructure for laboratory and clinical studies at the SKCCC. Faculty and staff consult and provide expertise in multiple areas, such as clinical study design, data analysis, education, grant preparation, IT applications to support research, manuscript preparation, patient-reported outcomes, population science study designs, protocol review, protocol writing, quality control, reproducible research, and study monitoring.
